Here is a list of basic medicines &
first aid items in readiness for minor illnesses around the home.
They need replacing at regular intervals. Always consult your pharmacist
or GP if you are worried or symptoms persist.
- Paracetamol Tablets
For relief of pain & fever, eg. Headaches, temperature. Do
not exceed the stated dosage.
- Paracetamol Mixture
For relief of pain or fever in young children, eg Calpol, Paracetamol
Elixiror Disprol. These items are not available on practice prescription.
- Soluble Aspirin & Ibuprofen Tablets (Nurofen)
These have an anti-inflammatory action (unlike paracetamol) so
are more effective in the relief of colds, flu, period pains,
sore throats, etc They should not be taken if you suffer from
indigestion or ulcers.
NB. Do not give aspirin to children under 12 years of age.
- Cough Linctus
A cough suppressant for the relief of a dry, tickly cough and
an expectorant to ease congested, bronchial symptoms.
- Anti-Diarrhoea Tablets
For the relief of diarrhoea in adults, eg. Imodium, Arret. In
cases of persistent symptoms consult your GP.
- Calamine Lotion
For relief of sunburn, rashes & stings.
- Anti-Histamines
For relief of hayfever symptoms or allergic reactions.
- Antacid Preparations
For the relief of heartburn and indigestion. Consult your doctor
if symptoms persist or worsen.
